More than a promise

Letters

Editor:

I applaud the SCRD for finally installing water meters – they are the obvious tool to employ to manage this precious resource.

I am concerned about how we will be charged and what mechanisms will be in place to ensure that consumers aren’t faced with costly surprises with no recourse.

We try our best to conserve water and were most embarrassed to discover that there existed a leak in our system – a leak that was wasteful and could have been costly. A small leak over the period of a month, let alone a year, can add up to a lot of wasted water. Reading our meter frequently is not really a practical solution and for some, pretty well impossible. I feel we need more than a promise that the SCRD will deal fairly and reasonably with anomalies. While I have been unable to find a device at reasonable cost so I can monitor our consumption, one must surely exist.

I am in no way letting the SCRD off the hook for having, until now, badly mismanaged our water resources. I trust that we will soon have ample supply for our growing population; otherwise, no more building permits should be issued.
