It was a very nice ad the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) submitted to the July 24 edition of Coast Reporter, extolling democracy and complimenting Gibsons Recycling Depot on their "excellent level of free service in community recycling."

As stated by Ms. Cathy Kenny, solid waste co-ordinator for the SCRD, an SCRD outreach program on recycling will begin in September, culminating in yet another survey which will allow the SCRD to determine if a request for proposals (RFP) for recycling is the next step.

To my knowledge, each of the directors and elected officials of the SCRD hassupported sustainable recycling and zero waste. Curbside collections and unmanned depots that collect from Gibsons and truck to Sechelt before being taken off the Coast do not appear sustainable and are not going to result in zero waste.

Ms. Kenny states that the SCRD is "unable, by law, to subsidize local business even if the will exists."

I don't believe it is anyone's intention to have the Gibsons Recycling Depot subsidized by government funding. My question is that, if and when another RFP is put out, will the option of an enhanced comprehensive depot be included, along with the curbside collection and unmanned depots as previously proposed? This would make for a level playing field and then, to quote the SCRD ad, "Everyone Has a Voice."
