It is unbelievable to me that Gibsons and Sechelt continue to consider large housing developments without first dealing with infrastructure, including water, sewage and roadways, believing that the issues that presently bedevil current citizens will somehow miraculously solve themselves.

We presently suffer from water shortages, touted as “watering” issues when in fact real drinking water shortages are on the horizon. Who hasn’t experienced extensive delays on our roadways during ferry flushes and even during regular peak hours of traffic?

Wait and leave-behind times on our ferries, usually experienced in summer, are occurring earlier and earlier as population growth outstrips job availability.

The Sunshine Coast is unique in many ways and the reality is there will never be major employers here. To follow the old models of growth for growth’s sake will only saddle the present population with greater hardship and create frustration for new arrivals who are anticipating a relaxing and pleasant community.

A moratorium on future development needs to be instigated until we solve or have in place firm plans to meet current and future needs of our citizens.
