Milne’s claims fall flat

Letters

Editor:

Having “thrown his hat in the ring” by announcing he is seeking re-election, it would appear that Mayor Milne has finally found a use for his hat!

As an active and interested member in our community, I feel compelled to question some of the statements he made in the Coast Reporter article July 13 (“Milne to seek re-election”). After all, if he wants to be my mayor for another four long years, then surely I may do this?

Responding to his statement that “everyone I spoke with wants to avoid going backwards – they want us to move forward on the foundation put in place since 2014,” I say this. If I hired a builder to build me a house and all that they accomplished in four years was a foundation, then I’d find myself a different builder. I guess that not moving at all solves any worry of going backwards, whereas moving forward with a vision would be of much greater benefit to our community.

I don’t understand his statement that he was able to “publicly and openly demonstrate how a diverse and independent group of community members can work together on council.” We’re not talking the United Nations here.

By stating that his council has approved more development applications and building permits “than at any time in Sechelt’s history,” he is hinting at an accomplishment while taking credit for something that is directly as a result of the Lower Mainland real estate boom.

Lastly, “Developers are lining up to do business in Sechelt.” I agree, they’re lined up all right – “waiting” for public hearings, approvals, building permits, etc.

When I look around Sechelt, I don’t see growth, I see stagnation and it concerns me. Come Oct. 20, I’m hoping that my concerns will be put to rest.
