Mayor sets example

Letters

Editor:

Kudos to Gibsons Mayor Bill Beamish for setting a fine example, not once but twice this month, for the citizens of Gibsons and beyond.

First, he asked that the contractor tearing down the former RCMP building on School Road make “valuable parts available to the community” for reuse, following a successful experience of doing this in Haida Gwaii (“Former Gibsons RCMP building to become supportive housing,” March 15).

Now Mayor Beamish has pledged to ride his bicycle to (and from) every meeting at Town Hall throughout the month of May (“TraC wants May to be Active Transportation Month,” March 22).

I hope the mayor’s actions will inspire others to get out of our cars at least some of the time in favour of walking, cycling, riding the bus, etc. And that governments and private contractors, or anyone tearing down a building, will seek ways to make as much material as possible available for reuse. To lessen the burden on the landfill, and on an Earth on which we are drawing so heavily in so many ways, every positive step counts.
