As a Gibsons property owner and taxpayer, I read with dismay Sean Eckford’s article in last week’s Coast Reporter regarding the continuing legal actions that the very vocal minority group, the Gibsons Alliance of Business and Community (GABC), is taking against the Town of Gibsons and the George development.
The proposed George development was basically put to the taxpayers of Gibsons in the last municipal elections in which not one anti-George candidate was elected – so the voting taxpayers of Gibsons voted overwhelmingly in support of the George and all the positive benefits it will bring to the town, and the greater Sunshine Coast. GABC and their supporters are costing the taxpaying residents of Gibsons tens of thousands of dollars that could be well spent on other much needed infrastructure or social issues within Gibsons, not to mention the amount of time that the council officers are needing to spend on this when their time could be spent on more productive matters.
The majority have voted and the naysayers and no-change advocates like GABC and their vocal few supporters need to accept the majority vote. As we enter another winter when seasonal businesses close their doors or move to limited winter hours, and the locals go without income, the vocal minority and the GABC should feel guilty of depriving and denying the potential for year-round activity and jobs and major economic benefit which the George will bring.
