Villains on the phone

Letters

Editor:

Another phone scam. This one feels like a new (to me) variation on an old theme. It would be easy to react before thinking things through!

The phone rings. A recorded voice says your Microsoft Windows Support account is about to auto-renew. You will automatically be charged $200-some. To cancel, call this number …

The villains don’t bother to customize the recording with names, dates, or places. In that way it’s like the calls that impersonate Revenue or Immigration offices and claim you are in danger of arrest if you don’t pay something.

Scammers don’t even need to pay offshore employees to make these automated calls. It just takes one computer. The only calls they need staff for are those victims unfortunate enough to be caught unawares, alarmed by the call, and ready to be deceived further.

These few scoundrels shouldn’t make us forget that this world is full of good folk.
