Thoughts on a sign

Driving home last Friday I saw a sign that caught my eye. At first glance (I was the passenger) I thought it might be a sign promoting a local stage production of The Chronicles of Narnia as I thought I saw a large pterodactyl-type bird airborne with a man on its back (wearing a hat?). Turned out it was a heron on a campaign sign directing one to Mayor Milne’s re-election website.

Why a heron? My observation of herons is that they spend an awful lot of time just standing around waiting for something to happen rather than actively pursuing that something. Sechelt could do to model itself after the inquisitive raven who has a host of skills, knows how to combine them and goes after what they want – even if there is some risk involved.

Then there’s the tagline, “Keep the change.” Is this a reference to the money (change) we will have left after many of us pay our increased property taxes or did the sign company make an error and leave off the word “coming”? Now there’s a message I could get behind. “Keep the change coming” – out with the old and in with the new.

It’s time for a change in Sechelt before we, like the pterodactyl, become extinct!
