Teacher left confused

Letters

Editor:

I appreciate your (Mr. Gleeson’s) erudite and provocative perspective. Indeed, you were your usual feisty self with your “Indoctrinated for the Green New Age” piece in last week’s paper and, as a teacher, I share your concern over teachers pushing our philosophical agenda onto students, acknowledging that I may, at times, do it myself.

Two things strike me as bizarre in the article however. One is the CCR analogy, which seems brutally trite given our climate situation. The other is singling out a teacher promoting (or “indoctrinating”) concern about climate change. You may have learned “a lot of other rubbish” in Grade 5 and other grades, but to lump fear about climate change into that heap seems, again, bizarre.

I am left confused as to whether you think concern about climate change is overblown, or that all indoctrination by teachers is wrong. Maybe it’s both. If it’s the former, then your point of view frightens me. If it’s the latter, then I’m perplexed as to why, with all the indoctrination going on (through advertising, bell-schedules, political correctness, fake news), you pick this particular event to shed light on.
