Students offer hope

Re: “Indoctrination for the New Green Age,” April 5.

Children everywhere are trying to come to grips with the unfolding climate crisis in a world where they have virtually no control or say – until now. In Canada they are witnessing provincial and federal governments fighting against climate taxation and attempting to rationalize a pipeline.

And strangest of all, they are growing up in a world where most adults barely mention the climate situation, let alone do anything about it.

Our children’s futures will be impacted by climate change more than the adults currently in charge and they will be spending their lives adapting to a situation they are not responsible for creating. The truth young people and their parents are being told by Greta Thunberg via social media is based on science.

Refusing to publish students’ heartfelt “junk mail” because, according to you, they are using the same talking points is basically censorship. Characterizing the actions and letters of the children as “indoctrination” by their parents and teachers smacks of propagandizing. Both of these actions are the hallmarks of totalitarian governments.

The student strikes offer a much-needed beacon of hope. Soon, I predict, there will be hundreds of millions of striking children worldwide demanding our corporate-controlled governments take the action urgently needed to prevent climate catastrophe. In our democracy, it is their right and indeed their duty to do so!
