Sizing up the candidates

Letters

Editor:

I have a list of candidates I plan to vote for, and it’s not the one I started with.

I have read platforms, met with candidates, helped to host an all-candidates’ meeting, and had frank discussions with other voters.

Many candidates gave the same answers to questions, and it took some refining to get at what each meant by their answer. I moved from understanding the words to assessing the actions of candidates.

One issue rose to the top for me: consultation. A neighbour clarified that consultation is a process, not an event. Who will truly represent residents by engaging in a consultative process?

I had to strike off those who turned down a meeting. I had to add in those who answered endless questions now and in the past, both face-to-face and in follow-up emails. I had to choose between those willing to engage and those who live within town borders. I’m choosing engagement.
