Re: “Sea Cav Society to hold one-day event in August,” May 10.

I have been a resident of the Sunshine Coast for 19 years and I have enjoyed the Sea Cavalcade every year with my children, extended family and friends and watched it grow immensely, which helps our local business and increases our economy. Many people come not only from all over the Coast but from Vancouver and from the Interior to enjoy all the events, including the fireworks. I am very grateful for all the hard work from the past volunteers!

I would like to express my concern that ending the event for the future will be detrimental to our community across the board. In this new day and age of technology, I suggest possibly promoting younger volunteers through social media and through the schools to encourage residents and businesses to volunteer their time for this event to keep it going for our children and our future children’s children. This has been a tradition for the Coast and we need to encourage positive all-rounded fun for all ages, as there are still not enough activities especially for the younger generation (ages 12 to 18).

We, the older generation, should be encouraging dancing and other health-positive stimulation to body, mind and soul. The Sea Cavalcade has promoted that type of stimulation and should be supported by the residents of the Sunshine Coast and the Town of Gibsons.

I would gladly volunteer my time for this event and others that promote this type of atmosphere.
