Gobsmacked at Seawatch

Letters

Editor:

I took a trip out to Seawatch Monday. I don’t know much about the history of the community’s geotechnical problems other than what I’ve read in Coast Reporter and the occasional bit of “word of mouth.” So why am I writing this? I was absolutely gobsmacked witnessing how local government, that had just issued an evacuation order to Seawatch residents, was not doing everything in their power to help these people evacuate as quickly and safely as possible. Instead, the district’s solution was to erect concrete barricades preventing access into or out of Seawatch. The residents were left to carry their belongings down snow-covered roads and past these barricades in order to reach their vehicles.

One of the Seawatch residents I spoke with told me they had called the district asking for at least some help with snow removal to make it safer for carrying the contents of their homes to their vehicles. Sechelt’s alleged response was to have a public works employee drop three bags of salt off at the barricade.

I sincerely hope the residents of Seawatch can endure and find resolution after being forced from their homes. I also sincerely hope that those at the District of Sechelt who had a hand in the current Seawatch situation can remember who they serve.
