Gibsons is their town

Re: “Run where you live” by Brian K. Sadler, Letters, Sept. 28.

While I understand Mr. Sadler’s point regarding having candidates run in areas they pay taxes, I believe there are other points to consider. Are the candidates part of our community? Do they work here, shop here, send their kids to school here, do business here, volunteer here? Do they enrich our lives and make a positive difference? If so, why would we exclude them?

We are fortunate to have capable people stepping up to public service. The fact they live in areas outside the town boundary does not, in my opinion, negate the contributions they have made and wish to continue making.

I believe all the candidates consider Gibsons their town. It’s where their hearts reside. Let’s not eliminate those who are required to pay taxes elsewhere when it’s clear they want to help enrich our town.

Gibsons is more vibrant for the effort, talent and enthusiasm of all those candidates who want to serve. One of the real benefits of having these folks as councillors or mayor is that they are unlikely to have to recuse themselves due to conflicts of interest as has happened repeatedly with the current council.

Let’s vote to be inclusive, not exclusive. These non-resident contenders have abilities that shouldn’t be wasted, so let’s allow ourselves to colour outside the lines and choose the best people possible to lead this town, regardless of their property address.
