Blast from the past

Letters

Editor:

My husband and I were interested to read Sophie Woodrooffe’s article on the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (“Playing around on the Atlantic,” Jan. 10) as we joined the first race in 1986 from Gran Canaria to Barbados and experienced similar problems. The two of us made the trip in a British-built, 33-foot sailboat with only a sextant for plotting our position. We made it safely in 22 days although our main rudder got damaged and we had to rely on a small wind vane rudder for direction. A good trip, however.

Thanks for the article. For us it was a blast from the past!
