Letters: Why is kennel not held to regional standard?

Editor:

We moved to the tranquility and peace of Roberts Creek 17 years ago, yet there has not been one summer where we can enjoy our patio, surrounding forest or the simple pleasure of outdoor gardening, because of the daily, incessant din of dogs barking, howling, crying and yapping...all from a local business. We often retreat indoors or even leave the property to get away from the deplorable cacophony.

Over the years, I and several other neighbours have sent in dozens of SCRD bylaw complaint forms, plus several emails with recordings of the raucous noise from the kennel. In all those years I have never had a visit from a bylaw officer to experience first-hand the disturbing clamour. I have received emails ensuring me the SCRD staff is “working

on the issue.” Not sure what working entails because we are kept in the dark as to what the plans are or what is actually being done. This month I have been essentially asked to stop sending in complaint forms because “they require time to process.” If I can’t send in official complaint forms, what are my options to express my angst with this non-compliant business?

Any other business industry that disturbs the peace and wellbeing with almost constant noise pollution from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (often earlier and later) every day of the year (Christmas and every holiday included) would have to take remedial measures to comply with regional and industry standards, why not this kennel?
