The SCRD Board showed real vision last week when it decided to support free transit for youth up to age 18 starting this September on the Sunshine Coast. This important initiative will address a multitude of challenges in our community including affordability, economic disparity, social disconnection, labour shortages, carbon emissions and youth fitness and mental health. Similar initiatives have also been shown to improve transit service overall in communities that have adopted them. Parents can help make this a success by using the bus when possible and encouraging their kids to do the same, modelling behaviour that will reduce emissions, relieve traffic congestion, encourage healthy lifestyles and save money.
