We are joining the growing chorus of homeowners in Sechelt that would like to see some strict new regulations regarding STRs. We live in West Porpoise Bay in – until two years ago – a very quiet neighbourhood on a private road. Our former neighbour adjacent to us sold his large home and it’s become an Airbnb with a high turnover. Most guests stay two or three nights and then the parade starts all over again. The house can accommodate 12 or more guests, and hence there are usually several groups, with two to five cars arriving and departing at all hours of the day and night. And although we’ve now put up several signs and installed two speed bumps to slow down the traffic, they continue to drive too fast, putting small children and pets in harm’s way. The house has a large deck where the visitors eat, drink, chat, laugh, swear, and play music during the day and late into the evening, often past 11 p.m. Our tranquil life here has changed drastically, for the worse. Why is this “hotel” permitted to operate in our quiet neighbourhood? One night for 12 guests costs them $809!
