Letters: Sovereign questions

'Why does Canada have a foreigner for a King? Why do images of English royalty appear on Canadian currency?'

King Charles III and his wife Camilla were invited to Canada by Prime Minister Mark Carney so that the King would give the Canadian Speech from the throne. It is said that the invitation was mostly symbolic meant to counteract President Trump’s denigrating attitude in treating Canada as if it is not an independent sovereign country and frequently stating it should be the 51st state of the United States.

The visit of King Charles III was replete with pomp and circumstance, and he was referred to as King of Canada a number of times to confirm Canada was a sovereign nation.

Knowing Trump’s mentality and his apparent conviction that he never makes mistakes, he may counter that what happened in Ottawa as full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

He may say if Canada is an independent sovereign country why does it have many indicators to the contrary. Here are a few of them.

Why does Canada have a foreigner for a King? Why do images of English royalty appear on Canadian currency? Why is a Canadian national holiday named after a Queen (Victoria) who never set foot in Canada? Why do our members of Parliament pledge true allegiance to King Charles III instead of the Constitution of Canada; and above all, why are laws passed by the Canadian Parliament of no force and effect until the King’s Canadian representative in Canada, the Governor General, consents to them? And other indicia indicative of less than full sovereignty and independence.

This may indicate that for Canada to solidify its status as an independent sovereign nation it should to rid itself of these foreign imperialistic trappings and remnants of historical subjugation.
