Letters: Shake off the cocoon of COVID and mobility-induced isolation

I am a 75-year-old lady who for the past four years, due to mobility issues and the COVID situation, has found that I have managed to create a cocoon around myself and live alone in my little bubble. I don’t know what prompted me to give myself a kick in the rear end and tell myself to get out there and interact with others and bring smiles and laughter back into my life, but I did.

I decided to finally become a member of the Seniors Centre. I had almost convinced myself that I am not old and the Seniors Centre is full of old people. WRONG. I went down on Monday and became a member. The first thing I noticed was how well I was received, not only by the volunteers, but the members who I approached to sit and talk with for a while. Two days later I went back to enjoy the Card, Board Games and Coffee afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed playing Scrabble with two other members and was totally immersed in the banter and laughter we enjoyed while playing the game. Returning home I felt totally rejuvenated.

Full of old people, definitely not. Full of caring people of varying ages, yes. It feels so good to finally shake the confinement of the cocoon and fly free like a butterfly with no bubble to hold me back.

Are you caught up in your own self-made cocoon? Then it is time to kick yourself in the rear end and go down and meet this wonderful section of our community. Trust me, you will not be sorry.
