Following up on David Kipling’s letter (“SCDRA’s gift to the airport,” July 16) on the improvements made to the airport by the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA), I would like to add some benefits the SCDRA made to the community.

After receiving 100 per cent support from the mayor and council, who would have thought the success would be as good as it turned out to be? The impact to the restaurants, motels and tourist industry were not even considered, let alone the improvements to the airport.

The races turned out to be one of the major events on the Coast, and were supported by organizations such as the Sechelt Fire Department, RCMP, Lions Club and Ambulance Service, as well as many groups and individuals.

I understand there is some concern about a layer of rubber on the runway. I don’t think this is a problem, but it could be corrected by the SCDRA in hours.

The recent improvements to the airport are beneficial to all users.
