Letters: Prioritize long-term housing

'Given the limited long-term rental prospects, might it not be time for all levels of government to put significant resources into non-profit co-op housing that doesn’t feed the speculation that has caused so much pain and suffering?'
housing

Editor:

Having just received the glossy magazine insert @Home on the Coast, I would like to suggest a sister publication: Homeless on the Coast. No doubt it would interest the many people who find themselves without a roof over their head, under threat of losing their rental, or who are otherwise precariously housed.

Further on the housing front, I was pleased to see that our Gibsons council seem to be holding out for longer term rental commitments from potential developers. The last thing this community needs is more luxury condos, whether seasonally occupied or not.

Given the limited long-term rental prospects, might it not be time for all levels of government to put significant resources into non-profit co-op housing that doesn’t feed the speculation that has caused so much pain and suffering?

Without more reasonably affordable long-term rentals, our shortage of workers in every field – health care, RCMP, BC Ferries to name a few – is only going to get more dire and it won’t be a pretty picture.

Sincerely,

Alan Sirulnikoff, Gibsons
