On Wednesday, March 16, a beaver was killed by a vehicle driving along the highway at Ruby Lake. Two days after a coyote was killed in the same area. This is the second beaver in less than three months. This area is also a crossing for red-painted turtles, otter, elk and many other animals. Along this stretch, there is also a school bus stop and many pedestrians crossing to enjoy the natural environment and activities.
It makes me sad to see so many animals being killed and I worry it is only a matter of time before a human is hit or killed.
This is a windy, hilly stretch of road making it hard to know what is ahead and is used by many people coming off the ferry that may not be familiar with the road. I ask that the Ministry of Transportation please consider putting in rumble bumps to slow and alert traffic as well as permanent pedestrian and wildlife crossing signs. Until then I ask all drivers to stay alert for our two-legged and four-legged friends so they can stay safe.
