I am writing to express my outrage at a situation I encountered outside of Roberts Creek Community Centre Hall on Saturday Nov. 27. I witnessed a group of silent protesters who had attached to their clothing a yellow Star of David (a six pointed Jewish star). Jewish people under Nazi rule were forced to wear this yellow star so they could be targeted for persecution, humiliation, arrest, deportation and murder.
To suggest that not being able to enter a craft fair without a vaccination passport is equivalent to the horrendous time in history when six million Jewish people were murdered is beyond human comprehension. To appropriate deep symbols of Jewish pain is offensive, inaccurate and attempts to trivialize the horrific atrocities of the Holocaust as well as the memory of the victims and survivors.
My hope is that we will come together as a community to build a society that is more compassionate, educated and committed to the value of human dignity.
