Letters: Not what you think it means

Editor:

Regarding the debate that has developed between P.J. Reece and Michael Maser—while I disagree with just about everything P.J. had to say in his letter, I feel I must point out that his attack is based on a misuse of the term “social democracy” by Michael Maser. My dictionary defines “social democracy” as “the political principles of those who hold that socialism should be achieved as an economic and political form of human society in place of capitalism, and that it should be done through the normal workings of democracy” (Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language, Encyclopedic Edition). I don’t think that’s what Mr. Maser meant, since he seems to be referring to the Canadian government as “our social democracy,” which it never has been, since the NDP (who once aspired to social democracy) has never been in power federally. His message would have been less confusing if he’d simply referred to “democracy”, as opposed to “tyranny,” Or perhaps he meant “liberal democracy,” a trendy term lately, that refers to the capitalist democracies of the West.

As for my personal stance on all this: “Yes” to the people of Ukraine! “No” to the convoy thugs!

Sincerely,

Anne Miles
