Editor:
Cheers for Kate-Louise Stamford, Sunshine Coast Regional District director for Area F, where I live. At an Electoral Area Services Committee meeting Thursday, she listened attentively to residents of the Tideview Road area in Langdale.
Six residents, including me, spoke in opposition to a zero setback proposed for home construction at 1504 Tideview. People expressed worries that equipment would block access by emergency services. The property is on a precipitously steep bank overlooking the ocean. The road is narrow and winding. Several people called it a “goat path.”
Tideview Road caved in twice last year and sustained a funicular crash in 2014 that injured three people. The road still bears yellow do-not-cross tape from a landslide last year that took out a Fortis connection. The bank became unstable after a property owner, armed with a zero setback variance, built a supposedly stable retaining wall.
Stamford recommended that the variance question be tabled. She said it should wait until information arrives from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
Donna McMahon, area E director, also spoke sagaciously toward tabling the motion. As the discussion concluded, the committee voted to table it.
That’s what the residents hoped for. Thank you, Stamford and McMahon. The Sunshine Coast needs more representatives like you who listen to constituents.
