Letters: Kinnickinnick Park off-leash status an accessibility issue

Dogs running with a stick outside in the dirt. Playing in an off leash dog park on a sunny summer day. Poodle, husky, shepherd, retriever, mutt, mix.
Sechelt council is considering removing the off-leash dog designation of Kinnickinnick Park. Some residents are not impressed.

Editor:

These fields are the only place that people with mobility issues can safely exercise their dogs. Close to the parking lot there is covered seating, which  affords protection from the elements.

Unfortunately, Sechelt’s parks department only hears about the one per cent of the irresponsible dog owners and not 99 per cent who are responsible.

The park has been a mental saviour to the owners and their dogs.

To blame the dogs for damage to the fields is using them as a scapegoat. One day of soccer in November does more damage to the fields than the dogs do in months.

Since the parks were built decades ago there has been a failed effort to make turf fields on a pile of gravel.

With climate change a new direction is necessary to deal with heat, rain and water restrictions. We need council to act in the best interest of the two-and four-legged users.
