The Roberts Creek Christmas fair this past weekend, after a year’s absence, was lovely as usual, marred only by one occurrence. Following public health guidelines, the fair required masks and proof of vaccination for everyone entering the hall. Saturday afternoon, a small group of anti-compliance demonstrators stood silently near the entrance, bearing signs and wearing yellow stars to establish identification with Danish Jews during the German occupation. The most prominent sign read “Your compliance is our persecution. We are the new ‘vermin.’ But they’re coming for you, too. Ponder this as you ‘show your papers.’”
I am old enough to recall quite vividly the impact of polio on friends who were crippled for life, the scars of smallpox on the faces of relatives, and the human devastation of the Holocaust. I find it transgressive that these people, who seem to be ignorant of history and of science, have the gall to spout this nonsense and to claim to be victims of a public health system that is saving lives against the headwinds of their stupidity. These protesters pose as lambs of God, while really they are the sheep of fascism.
However, to their credit, they stayed several feet away from the entrance, didn’t make any noise, and finally left after two or three hours.
