Letters: Glassford Road’s been closed too long

Editor:

I would like to know why the Town of Gibsons has left Glassford Road closed for so long. I understand the need for safety measures and speed limits along Glassford Road and for consultation in the neighborhood but the road has been closed for six months.

Consultation in the neighborhood should have been done before the road was closed and by now the town should have made a decision and started making the improvements needed along Glassford Road.

By closing Glassford Road the local traffic has had to continue along Gower Point Road and down Dogwood Road to get into the neighborhood. Gower Point Road is narrow and has much less room for pedestrians or bicycles than Glassford Road and Dogwood Road is badly in need of pot hole repairs.

Much like South Fletcher Road at the School Road corner, Glassford Road needs a better right turn to slow the vehicles turning from Gower Point Road. Post speed limits of 40kph along Glassford Road. Add three or four speed bumps, sidewalks, crosswalks and bicycle lanes on both sides of the road and Glassford Road will be as safe as the other roads in town with traffic calming measures.

The Town has added sidewalks, bike lanes, lower speed limits and traffic calming to many of the roads in the town including Marine Drive, Gibsons Way, North and South Fletcher Road and Franklin Road. Why is the decision to improve Glassford Road proving so difficult? Please get the lead out, make your decision, fix and reopen Glassford Road. Thank you.

Fred Rupert, Gibsons
