Letters: Gibsons church has been valued part of community

'The current application does not request a change to the existing C-5 zoning, but rather a modest, unit-specific amendment to allow religious assembly in a single suite. This thoughtful approach preserves the broader zoning intent while recognizing a long-standing, beneficial community use.'

Editor:

I am writing in strong support of Christ the King Church (CTK) and its application for a zoning amendment to continue holding worship services in Unit #219 of the Gibsons Quay Building.

CTK has been a valued part of the Lower Gibsons community since 2006, and although the property was not originally zoned for religious assembly, the town issued four consecutive Temporary Use Permits over the years. The church has operated responsibly in this space for nearly two decades, contributing positively to the community.

The current application does not request a change to the existing C-5 zoning, but rather a modest, unit-specific amendment to allow religious assembly in a single suite. This thoughtful approach preserves the broader zoning intent while recognizing a long-standing, beneficial community use.

Some concerns raised at the May 20 council meeting — including property tax and parking — are not directly related to CTK’s application, but instead fall under the landlord’s responsibilities. I urge the council to reconsider the planning department’s recommendation and support CTK’s continued presence at this location.

Denying this application would not only disrupt a well-established community institution, but also send a troubling message about the town’s support for diverse community uses in its downtown core.

Sincerely,

Deb Mowbray
