Editor:
I realize that tastes will differ, and so on, but I could not help wondering who voted in the favourite eateries section of the People’s Choice Awards survey that appeared in the Coast Reporter of Oct. 15, as several restaurants that I would consider favourites for different reasons, didn’t even have a mention, while some listed as favourites are ones that I visit infrequently, because they lack the virtues of those excluded and mentioned below.
The Village Restaurant, for instance, is clearly a favourite for a wide range of locals, as it provides not only a competent kitchen at reasonable prices, but the warm hospitality and prompt service of Carmine and her family, and is often full or nearly full with regulars. As a budget alternative to nearly everything else around, it is outstanding.
Golden City, also owned by Carmine and her husband Ming, provides equally competent food and warm hospitality, and is one of the only Chinese restaurants on the Sunshine Coast. Moreover, its buffet (when it is available) is so popular that people line up to get in on the Sundays it is offered. How it missed even being mentioned in the ratings is a mystery to me.
Finally, Saffron, a superb little South Asian restaurant in the Trail Bay mall, has offered the best pizza I have ever had since we came to the Coast, not to mention a wide range of South Asian dishes, all competently and deliciously prepared, and served with charm, grace, and warmth – at prices that will bankrupt nobody!
If the Coast Reporter is to publish these surveys, it seems to me that it needs to put a little more effort into ensuring that a broader base of responders is used, as this recent one strikes me as quite misleading.
