Letters: Desalination is looking more appealing for the Sunshine Coast

Stage 4 water conservation for the third year in a row. Does that make anyone else wonder what we can do to prevent this in the future?

I’ve lived extensively in countries with severe droughts, and some of the ways these communities deal with the lack of rainwater includes cisterns (rainwater collection) and desalination systems. In a place where we are surrounded by ocean water it may make sense to look into the desalination option, as our homes do not allow for rainwater collection in most cases.

According to the UN environment program online, while there are ecological trade-offs, more and more people in water-scarce countries rely on desalinated water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Which poses the question: is this a solution? Or what is the way forward? As there has been more and more construction over the years, and the population is growing, we need a reliable water source.
