Letters: Define sustainable forestry carefully

Simplistic answers are seldom the best. Yes, the world still needs some wood but we do have options. Hemp grows faster than trees and so does bamboo. We need to define sustainable forestry carefully.

Old growth forests really need to be off the list as we have already taken more than we should. We cannot wait 500 years and consider that sustainable.

The other problem areas are watershed areas. We are entering a period of drought and heat waves. Ground water will become more important each year and growing trees takes decades.

Unfortunately, the province has unloaded problem areas onto the Sunshine Coast Community Forest.

I, for one, would rather have a standing tree and water over a freshly painted arts center. It is never simple.
