I am writing to express my concerns regarding the decision to convert the bathrooms at Chatelech Secondary School into all-gender facilities. While I appreciate the intent to create inclusive spaces, the potential risks associated with this change, particularly concerning female health and safety, cannot be ignored… but apparently seem to be.
I understand that the administration and SD46 plan to install floor-to-ceiling walls in these new facilities for privacy’s sake, however this design may inadvertently create a perfect location for predators to take advantage of vulnerable individuals. With limited visibility and increased privacy, the risk of unsolicited behavior include vaping, drugs, harassment and even assault become a very real concern. How is this good for person needing to use the washroom?
Using the restroom is a deeply personal and private experience and it is unfair and in my mind outrageous to expect females to share this space with males. While I understand the importance of creating inclusive environments, it should not come at the expense of the comfort and safety of individuals who identify with traditional gender norms.
Were students polled about this? Parents? I haven’t talked with one female teenager that is okay with this.
This is going to make using the washroom stressful and anxiety inducing for many… and for what? Gender neutral bathrooms/ private ones already exist at the school. Save the money on this ill-conceived plan and put it towards something that will actually benefit all the students of Chat and the SD46 district.
