The temporary closure of the south end of Glassford Road is in our opinion a commendable act by the Town in the effort to find ways of decreasing the speed and volume of traffic on a local neighbourhood road. Glassford was never intended for through traffic. There are many families with small children on this road and we have observed that prior to the closure some vehicles were going way too fast. The intersection at the south end allowed vehicles from Gower Point Road to enter Glassford almost without slowing down and the excessive width of Glassford invites speeding.
We understand that some people may feel inconvenienced by the closure but in our opinion the inconvenience is very minor in comparison with the advantage of a much quieter and safer street, that we are now experiencing after the temporary closure was put in place.
As an alternative to a permanent closure, a reconstruction of the south end intersection with Gower Point Road, whereby the intersection is moved slightly further north and with a 90 degree approach in combination with narrowing and traffic obstructions on Glassford could be considered. But a permanent closure at the south end would in our opinion by far be the best solution.
