Letters: Build grey water recycling into the building code

What to do about the water shortage! Permits are given for new builds, people are employed, more neighbourhoods are built and the share of water diminishes year to year.

Garden centres still sell specimen and tender plants alike, then gardeners watch them dry and die. Other communities are asked to share their resources. Will Sechelt ever have enough water to cover the summer months and (you know they’re coming) extended droughts?

What if the building code included piping and a tank to capture the grey water of households. When not required, the “excess” grey water is directed to the usual drainage system with a “Y” valve. The kitchen sink is an obvious resource and I’m sure many are using this water in the garden. The other sinks, tubs and shower water are not so easily reused.

Concerns about contaminants could be alleviated with a UV system, but after all, it’s for the garden.

It’s time to simplify active conservation of a diminishing resource and recycle the grey.
