Letters: Build for today, not 77 years from now

Coopers Green Hall in Halfmoon Bay is slated for replacement, but where its replacement will be located is now a point of debate.

Editor:

For the past 10 years Halfmoon Bay residents embarked upon a campaign to raise funds for the aging hall at Coopers Green Park. $400K was donated along with a government grant.

SCRD had concerns about sea level rise and Connor Park appeared as an option.

The provincial government predicts that in 2100 (in 77 years) there may be one metre (3 ft.) rise.

Apparently community halls on the Sunshine Coast have a serviceable life span of 40 to 80 years.

That being said, 77 years from now, a new hall in Coopers Green Park would be able to stand its lifetime. Then, if indeed there were sea level rise issues, Connor Park could be the other option.

We urge the SCRD to reconsider their decision for Connor Park and replace the hall at Coopers Green as was originally proposed for in the Coopers Green Park Management Plan.
