Letters: Arena ice benefits the minority

'We are still under Stage 4 restrictions so how can this board possibly justify this decision, which benefits a small minority while the majority of us are doing our best to minimize our use of water.'

Ice is returning to the Sunshine Coast Arena just in time for a hockey tournament.

After reading last week’s letter from Darlene Tymo about the decision by the SCRD board to use Chapman water for the Sechelt ice rink (“Ice install the wrong decision”), I think that the board has taken leave of its senses.

I am appalled and utterly disgusted by this irresponsible, insensitive and tone-deaf decision.

We are still under Stage 4 restrictions so how can this board possibly justify this decision, which benefits a small minority while the majority of us are doing our best to minimize our use of water.

If the figure of almost 120,000 l/week is correct, then one day’s amount at that rate would last my wife and me more than 200 days as our consumption is well below 100l/day.

We are very careful about recycling grey water and use other ways of reducing consumption – all for the common good.

Why should we bother when the SCRD board wantonly flouts the draconian rules it imposes upon us?

Hardly a stellar start to their stewardship.
