Letter: A real highway on the Coast would improve lives

'A real highway will improve everyone’s lives. While it will result in some changes for a very few, properly done, it will be an effective, sustainable and positive asset for everyone – including those in Roberts Creek. Change is always a challenge but it’s time to build this.'

Building a real highway is long overdue (it’s been in the works since the 1980s!) There are many benefits but the biggest, for me, is safety.

My family has lived in Davis Bay since 1964, on the two-lane road that is mislabelled as a highway. I have counted more than 175 private driveways from ts’ukw’um to downtown Sechelt. I beg you to consider how difficult it is getting in and out of these driveways, as well as all the others up and down the Coast, safely!

We also have an ever-increasing number of logging and other heavy commercial vehicles as well as significant growth in all vehicle traffic.

I was disappointed that the letters published last week talked only about the Roberts Creek section of the new highway. I suggest the comment that the new real highway will “split” the Roberts Creek community is misleading. The fact is that the current road split the community a long time ago! (Who dares cross the current “highway” on foot? How many animals are hit? And, how many accidents – and fatalities – have occurred in that stretch of road?)

Additionally, did the letter writers consider the issues in other neighbourhoods? When Creekers come to Sechelt, are they OK with the traffic and delays in Davis Bay and Selma Park? Do they feel it is fair that people there have the traffic noise and disruption and safety concerns – or are they okay with a new highway being built elsewhere, but just not in the Creek?

A real highway will improve everyone’s lives. While it will result in some changes for a very few, properly done, it will be an effective, sustainable and positive asset for everyone – including those in Roberts Creek. Change is always a challenge but it’s time to build this.
