I wish to object to Rodrigues implying that white wall were a Nazi invention (“Talks expose distortions in art culture,” Coast Reporter, Oct. 6). The Bauhaus school of art and crafts, founded in 1919 in Germany by politically left leaning and neutral artists emphasized practical and simplicity in arts and crafts design. They used white in architectural design a lot. It is too simplistic to say that white walls started with the Nazis. Hitler closed down the Bauhaus but kept the white walls. White walls reflect light efficiently and so require less electricity to light an area. White is neutral so when displaying various coloured objects, it will not clash or take away from the colours of the object on display.
