No longer are public libraries tucked away in older buildings, often poorly lit and musty smelling. Now they are part of vibrant communities in relatively modern buildings, essential links within today’s society, in the towns, villages and cities up and down the province. Isn’t it time that regular funding reflects this change in society to account for the increase in our population, the many additional services modern libraries offer, such as a refuge during days of extreme heat and/or cold, provision of computers, plus all the programs these provide, now becoming more and more essential for the “techy” population? While the recent grants are most welcome, they do not address the present role and responsibilities of today’s modern libraries. A regular formula that reflects the roles and responsibilities of today’s libraries is needed.
