I have only contempt for the provincial NDP under John Horgan. As of Monday, Aug. 23, 780 people have been arrested in the Fairy Creek area, blockading to save British Columbia’s last remnants of ancient forests. These are mostly youth – many of them Indigenous – standing on the line and risking their freedom, fighting to save their future.
The science is in. It’s critical to the survival of life on our planet to save the last remnants of old-growth forests which sustain the biodiversity and healthy ecosystems that make our planet the magnificent home that sustains us and all life. Natural forests are the key to turning the tide on global warming, sequestering carbon to slow catastrophic climate change.
Soon the young Fairy Creek heroes will exceed the number arrested in the Clayoquot Sound blockades of the 1990s. Then, it was daily big news, global in scope. Media were there, reporting from the front lines of the blockades. A travesty of democracy today is that the media have been limited from witnessing and reporting on the Fairy Creek blockades by the RCMP. RCMP members have also been acting outside of the court orders that have chastised them for their goon-like behaviour.
I urge all voters on the Sunshine Coast to heed the latest International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released on Aug. 9 which warns that we are approaching the point of runaway global warming. The UN secretary general describes the report as “code red for humanity.” I hope everyone votes with this at top of mind.
