Letter: Short-term rental waste will attract animals on the Sunshine Coast

(To the tune of Teddy Bear’s Picnic)

If you go down to Sechelt today, you’re sure of a big surprise

If you’re near non-hosted STRs today, you’d better go in disguise

For every bear that ever there was

Will gather there for certain because

Today’s the day these savvy bears have their picnic

Every bear who’s been good is sure of a treat today

There’s lots of marvelous things to eat and a wonderful mess to make

On the streets where nobody sees

They’ll hide and feast as long as they please

That’s the way the bears have their picnic.

With the new collection schedule for garbage and recycling, the day for pick-ups has been changed and garbage will only be picked up every other week. This is manageable by residents, but not so for the multiple non-hosted STRs in Sechelt that have constant turnover of guests leaving excessive garbage. Conflict and death for our wild animals will increase significantly with such attractants sitting at the curb for days.
