Letter: Sechelt, we’ve erased the stars

On recent nighttime strolls, I ask myself why are there so many blinding, glaring lights everywhere? We have homes lit up like Disney castles, industrial sites lit with lights so bright it blinds you when they come into view, businesses routinely leave their lights on all night, and lots of people have super bright porch lights. A lot of that is the incorrect idea that light equals safety. It doesn’t. Which is more concerning –– a person at night walking around a fully lit closed store or people walking around the dark store with flashlights?

I miss the soft darkness of long ago evenings with a fully visible canopy of stars overhead. We have erased the stars from our skies. Have we forgotten the natural cycle of light and dark which sustains all growing things, plants, animals, and us human beings?
