Letter: Regarding short-term rentals, tourism isn’t the only game in town

'Have the hospital, the schools, local government, the repair shops and construction businesses, logging, the ferries, and the mill all closed down? No. In a notice in the same issue of the Coast Reporter, HSSP refers to the 380 people it employs and the 1,500 indirect jobs it supports.'

Having read the coverage of the Gibsons public hearing, “Calls for dispelling STR myths,” I would like to add the myth that tourism is the only game in town. Have the hospital, the schools, local government, the repair shops and construction businesses, logging, the ferries, and the mill all closed down? No. In a notice in the same issue of the Coast Reporter, HSSP refers to the 380 people it employs and the 1,500 indirect jobs it supports. People employed in union jobs with security and good pay, I might add. I support Gibsons’s proposed regulations for residential guest accommodation because they are necessary for ensuring housing for those who live and work on the Coast. We all support tourism, but think about it, what would it be like to be a resident here if tourism does become the only game in town?

Sincerely

Kathleen Vance, Gibsons
