Letter: Reframe the universal washroom conversation

'Rather than more hand wringing over the safety of girls and women, I would love to see PAC members (and others digging into this discourse) engaging in initiatives that educate, regulate, and hold accountable boys and men.'

Chatelech Secondary School will be the fifth school on the Sunshine Coast to add universal washrooms.

Editor:

I wanted to write and express my unwavering support for the School District 46 trustees and their decision to provide students with access to inclusive washrooms. To the trustees, thank you for considering all students in your decision making.

I was also struck by the number of arguments against universal washrooms that voiced concerns about the safety of girls and women. This struck me as interesting, and also ineffective. Rather than more hand wringing over the safety of girls and women, I would love to see PAC members (and others digging into this discourse) engaging in initiatives that educate, regulate, and hold accountable boys and men. Stop saying that girls need to be protected, and start saying that boys need to be held accountable. Please.

Thanks so much,

Anna Carson, Roberts Creek
