Letter: In absence of COVID restrictions, we need ways to assess our COVID risks

It is both alarming and puzzling to comprehend why COVID restrictions have simply been abandoned by those we depend upon to keep us informed and safe in a pandemic that has far from disappeared.

Mask mandates, vaccination, screening, and systematic testing have all been dropped or diminished.

Instead, we are told to guesstimate our respective risk levels, establishing with less and less information, a so-called “risk budget” as we wander about, go shopping, use public transit, attend public events, and socialize with friends and families.

This dereliction of due diligence has now resulted in some communities like Peterborough, ON., to create a tool to help people assess the specific COVID-19 risk in that region and protect themselves against the virus. Given our senior coastal population which includes our immunocompromised and disabled persons apparently forgotten through hasty “back-to-normal” prescriptions, it is imperative to create similar proactive measures here. We may be done with this virus, but it’s not done with us!
