Bicycles and motor vehicles travelling on the same roads is a dangerous thing. Adjustments need to be made for more protection for both cyclists and drivers. Years ago, when I was a kid in Edmonton, all cyclists had to have a licence on their bikes. I don’t know what protection this gave the cyclists or drivers, but it could be done in a way that added insurance protection for both.
If all bikes needed to have a licence plate that included insurance for rider and bike, this could be done by ICBC, just like car insurance is done. Funds collected for licences could be used to create safer separated bike lanes.
The way things are now, if a car hits a cyclist, the driver is automatically in the wrong. Bikes, especially electric bikes, can travel as fast as cars in towns and cities, and when drivers are making a right-hand turn and crossing a bike lane, this is very dangerous. Mirrors and shoulder checks are the only way to see cyclists coming in a bike lane, and there are blind spots. This needs to be thought out, with changes made to our infrastructure accordingly.
