Letter: Grit and determination, not fear decided the election

'Our federal election outcome, while not predicted just six months ago, was not driven by fear, but rather by dogged grit and determination!'

Editor:

Our federal election outcome, while not predicted just six months ago, was not driven by fear, but rather by dogged grit and determination! Determination founded on Canadians soberly coming to terms with and agreeing with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cogent analysis that the decades of increasing integration into the American economy are over. And that’s a good thing!

Canadians concluded, in our collective majority, that we’re done with Charlie Brown’s game of running to kick the football, slyly held by Lucy, only to be snatched away at the last second. That game is over and Canada is charting a fresh and hopeful course to a stronger, more independent, more equitable and greener future for ourselves and the world.

Men and women across this magnificent nation stand in supermarket aisles and other places of business, product in hand, searching the country or origin, seeking out Canadian goods where possible and non-American brands as a second choice. We do not do this out of fear, but because we are determined to play our part in re-building the new, dynamic and fairer Canadian economy. And we are prepared to pay a higher price, if necessary, to accomplish that goal.

Millions of moderate Conservatives, NDPers, Greens and Bloc supporters heard a more hopeful message in Mark Carney’s words and rejected the drone of “Canada is broken.” It is not broken and we will not allow it to be broken!

Canada is reaching out internationally with reliable allies to strengthen fair trading and political relationships and play our part on the global stage to build a better world.

We do not fear the challenges ahead. We embrace the opportunity and have confidence that Mark Carney shares the grit and determination needed to get the job done!

Elbows Up Canada! Our future is bright!
