It’s disappointing and short-sighted of our community leaders to cancel the 2021 Canada Day events. This is the view of most Canadians, the silent majority.
At the bottom of our driveway the Canadian flag is still fluttering on the address sign in the hot summer breeze. Many times each day I look at that flag, pay my respects to the children of the residential schools, the horrific experiences they endured and the mistakes of the colonial past. I’m sure all Canadian citizens would agree.
The Canadian flag also reminds me of the positive things colonialism has brought to Canada. A few wars might have ended differently and we just don’t know how it could have turned out. Thank you to veterans who fought for our freedom.
Almost all Canadians are beneficiaries of colonialism or have had the opportunity to receive the benefit. We have it very good, maybe too good. If you don’t agree, have a look around the Sunshine Coast. It’s been Vancouver’s playground for well over 100 years and we’re so fortunate to live here.
When you’re inside Canada looking out, our country might not look so good. In reality Canada is better than we may perceive, though it’s not always an easy path to success. If you’re not sure, just ask any new Canadian.
